English: THE RABBIT SENDS IN A LITTLE BILL.

English: It was the White Rabbit, trotting slowly back again, and looking anxiously about as it went, as if it had lost something; and she heard it muttering to itself, “The Duchess! The Duchess! Oh my dear paws! Oh my fur and whiskers! She’ll get me executed, as sure as ferrets are ferrets! Where can I have dropped them, I wonder!” Alice guessed in a moment that it was looking for the fan and the pair of white kid gloves, and she very goodnaturedly began hunting about for them, but they were nowhere to be seen-everything seemed to have changed since her swim in the pool, and the great hall, with the glass table and the little door, had vanished completely.
Korean: 종종걸음으로 돌아온 것은 흰 토끼였다. 토끼는 걱정이 가득한 표정으로 두리번거렸는데, 무언가 찾고 있는 듯 했다. “공작 부인! 공작 부인! 아, 내 발! 내 가죽! 내 수염! 난 처형당하고 말꺼야. 족제비가 족제비 한 것 만큼이나 확실하다고! 내가 그걸 도대체 어디다 떨어뜨렸을까?” 앨리스는 토끼가 아까 떨어뜨린 부채와 장갑을 찾고 있을 거라 생각했다. 마음씨 착한 앨리스는 그것들이 어디있는지 다시 찾아보았지만, 어디로 갔는 지 보이지 않았다. 앨리스가 웅덩이에서 헤엄치는 동안 모든 것이 변해 버린 것 같았다. 유리 탁자와 작은 문이 있던 큰 복도도 온데 간데 없이 사라져 버렸다.

English: Very soon the Rabbit noticed Alice, as she went hunting about, and called out to her in an angry tone, “Why, Mary Ann, what are you doing out here? Run home this moment, and fetch me a pair of gloves and a fan! Quick now!” And Alice was so much frightened that she ran off at once in the direction it pointed to, without trying to explain the mistake that it had made.
Korean: 앨리스가 물건들을 찾고 있을 때, 얼마 지나지 않아 토끼도 앨리스를 알아차렸다. 토끼는 화난 목소리로 “어쩐 일이야? 메리 앤, 여기서 대체 뭐하는 거지? 당장 집에 가서 부채와 장갑을 가져와. 빨리! 당장!”하고 소리질렀다. 앨리스는 겁이 나서 사람을 잘 못 보았다는 말을 할 겨를도 없이 토끼가 가리키는 곳으로 뛰어갔다.
English: “He took me for his housemaid,” she said to herself as she ran. “How surprised he’ll be when he finds out who I am! But I’d better take him his fan and gloves that is, if I can find them.” As she said this, she came upon a neat little house, on the door of which was a bright brass plate with the name “W.RABBIT,” engraved upon it. She went in without knocking, and hurried upstairs, in great fear lest she should meet the real Mary Ann, and be turned out of the house before she had found the fan the gloves.
Korean: 앨리스는 뛰어가며 “날 하녀라고 생각했나봐.”하고 혼잣말을 했다. “내가 하녀가 아닌 걸 알게되면 얼마나 놀랄까? 하지만 먼저 부채와 장갑을 찾아 주어야 하겠지. 찾을 수 있다면 말이야.” 이렇게 말하는 동안, 앨리스는 깔끔하게 지어진 작은 집에 도착했다. 대문에는 밝은 빛의 놋쇠로 만든 문패가 달려있었는데, 거기에는 “흰 토끼”라고 새겨져 있었다. 앨리스는 진짜 메리 앤을 만나서 부채와 장갑을 찾기 전에 쫓겨날까봐 겁이 난 나머지 노크도 없이 들어가 서둘러 이층으로 향했다.

English: “How queer it seems,” Alice said to herself, “to be going messages for a rabbit! I suppose Dinah’ll be sending me on message next!” And she began fancying the sort of thing that would happen: “‘Miss Alice! Come here directly, and get ready for your walk!’ ‘Coming in a minute, nurse! But I’ve get to watch this mousehole till Dinah comes back, and see that the mouse doesn’t get out.’ Only I don’t think,” Alice went on “that they’d let Dinah stop in the house if it began ordering people about like that!”
Korean: “참 이상한 일이다.”앨리스는 혼잣말을 했다. “내가 토끼의 심부름을 하게 되다니. 다음 번엔 디나가 내게 심부름을 시킬 수도 있겠네!” 그러면서 앨리스는 진짜 그런 일이 일어나면 어떨지 상상하기 시작했다. “‘앨리스 양, 당장 이리와서 산책 갈 준비를 하세요.’‘유모, 얼른 이리로 와요. 난 쥐구멍 속에 들어간 쥐를 감시하느라 못 움직여요. 그나 저나 이 쥐가 나올 생각을 안하네.’ 디나가 이런 식으로 사람들을 부려먹으면 아마 아무도 못말릴거야!”

English: By this time she had found her way into a tidy little room with a table in the window, and on it (as she had hoped) a fan and two or three pairs of tiny white kid gloves: she took up the fan and a pair of the gloves, and was just going to leave the room, when her eye fell upon a little bottle that stood near the looking-glass. There was no label this time with the words “DRINK ME,” but nevertheless she uncorked it and put it to her lips. “I know something interesting is sure to happen,” she said to herself, “whenever I eat or drink anything; so I’ll just see what this bootle does. I do hope it’ll make me grow large again, for really I’m quite tired of being such a tiny little thing!”
Korean: 이 즈음 앨리스는 창가에 탁자가 놓여 있는 아주 작은 방에 들어가게 되었다. 탁자 위에는 (앨리스가 바란 것 처럼) 부채와 몇 벌의 작은 아동용 흰 장갑이 놓여 있었다. 부채와 장갑 한 쌍을 집어 방을 나오려는 찰나, 앨리스는 탁자 위에 작은 병이 놓여 있는 것을 발견했다. 이번에는 “나를 마셔요.”같은 딱지가 붙어 있지는 않았지만, 앨리스는 마개를 열고 병을 입술에 갖다 댔다. “뭔가 흥미로운 일이 일어날게 확실해.” 앨리스가 중얼거렸다. “내가 뭔가를 먹거나 마실 때 마다 그랬으니까. 이 병이 무슨 일을 일으키는지 보자고. 이번엔 몸이 다시 커졌으면 좋겠다. 이렇게 작은 건 이제 딱 질색이야.”
English: It did so indeed, and much sooner than she had expected: before she had drunk half the bottle, she found her head pressing against the ceiling, and had to stoop to save her neck from being broken. She hastily put down the bottle, saying to herself, “That’s quite enough I hope I shan’t grow any more As it is, I can’t get out at the door I do wish I hadn’t drunk quite so much!”
Korean: 그런데 정말로 그렇게 되었다. 앨리스가 예상한 것 보다 더 빠르게. 병에 든 것을 반도 채 마시기 전에, 앨리스는 머리가 이미 천정에 닿은 것을 알아차렸다. 앨리스는 목을 부러지지 않게 하기 위해 몸을 구부려야 했다. 앨리스는 다급하게 병을 내려 놓으며 혼잣말을 했다. “이제 됐어. 더 커지진 않으면 좋으련만. 그랬다간 이 문으로 나가지도 못 할 거야. 내가 너무 많이 마신 게 아니었으면 좋겠는데.”
English: Alas! It was too late to wish that! She went on growing and growing, and very soon had to knell down on the floor: in another minute there was not even room for this, and she tried the effect of lying down with one elbow against the door, and the other arm curled round her head. Still she went on growing, and, as a last resource, she put one arm out of the window, and one foot up the chimney, and said to herself, “Now I can do no more, whatever happens. What will become of me?”
Korean: 아뿔싸! 앨리스의 바램대로 되기엔 이미 늦었다. 앨리스는 계속해서 커졌고 곧 무릎을 굽히지 않을 수 없었다. 하지만 조금 후에는 그럴 공간도 없었다. 앨리스는 한쪽 팔꿈치는 문에 닿고 다른 한쪽은 머리를 감싸도록 해 바닥에 드러누운 듯한 자세를 시도해보았다. 그러는 사이에도 앨리스는 점점 커지고 있었다. 앨리스는 최후의 수단으로 한 쪽 팔은 창문 밖으로 빼고, 발은 굴뚝으로 뻗으며 이렇게 말했다. “이제 더 이상은 못해. 난 어찌되는 걸까?”
English: Luckily for Alice, the little magic bottle had now had its full effect, and she grew no larger: still it was very uncomfortable, and as there seemed to be no sort of chance of her ever getting out of the room again, no wonder she felt unhappy.
Korean: 다행히도, 작은 병에 든 약의 효력이 다했고 앨리스는 더 이상 커지지 않았다. 하지만자세는 여전히 불편했다. 게다가 방 밖으로 다시 나갈 방법은 아무래도 없어 보였다. 앨리스는 자신이 불행하다고 생각했다.
English: “It was much pleasanter at home,” thought poor Alice, “when one wasn’t always growing larger and smaller, and being ordered about by mice and rabbits. I almost wish I hadn’t gone down that rabbit-hole and yet and yet it’s rather curious, you know, this sort of life! I do wonder what can have happened to me! When I used to read fairy-tales, I fancied that kind of thing never happened, and now here I am in the middle of one! There ought to be a book written about me, that there ought! And when I grow up, I’ll write one but I’m grown up now,” she added in a sorrowful tone, “at least there’s no room to grow up any more here.”
Korean: “집에 있는 게 더 나았어.”라고 앨리스는 생각했다. “몸이 커졌다 작아졌다하거나 생쥐나 토끼의 명령을 받는 것보다는 말이야. 토끼굴엔 괜히 들어왔나 봐. 하지만–, 하지만, 너무 궁금하잖아! 다음 번엔 내게 또 무슨 일이 생길까! 동화책을 읽을 땐, 그런 이상한 일은 절대 실제로 일어날 수 없다고 생각했는데, 여긴 이상한 일 투성이야! 내가 주인공인 동화책이 아니고서야 말이 안 돼! 나중에 좀 더 크면, 그런 책을 써야겠다. 하지만 다 커지긴 했는데.” 앨리스는 슬픈 목소리로 덧붙였다. “어쨌든, 이 방에서는 더 커질 수 있는 공간도 없어.”
English: “But then,” thought Alice, “shall I never get any older than I am now? That’ll be a comfort, one way never to be an old woman but then always to have lessons to learn! Oh, I shouldn’t like that!”
Korean: 앨리스는 계속 생각했다. “그러면 난 더 이상 나이를 먹을 수 없는 건가? 나이 든 여자가 되지 않는다는 점에서는 편하겠다. 하지만, 그럼 계속 공부를 해야 하잖아? 그건 싫어!”
English: “Oh, you foolish Alice!” she answered herself. “How can you learn lessons in here? Why, there’s hardly room for you, and no room at all for any lesson-books!”
Korean: “바보같은 앨리스!”하고 앨리스는 혼잣말을 계속하였다. “여기서 무슨 공부를 할 수 있다고 그래? 나 하나도 비좁은데, 교과서를 둘 곳이 어디 있다고!”
English: And so she went on, taking first one side and then the other, and making quite a conversation of it altogether, but after a few minutes she heard a voice outside, and stopped to listen.
Korean: 앨리스가 이렇게 번갈아가며 대화하듯 이야기를 이어가는 사이에 밖에서 목소리가 들려왔다. 앨리스는 혼자말을 멈추었다.
English: “Mary Ann! Mary Ann!” said the voice, “fetch me my gloves this moment!” Then came a little pattering of feet on the stairs. Alice knew it was the Rabbit coming to look for her, and she trembled till she shook the house, quite forgetting that she was now about a thousand times as large as the Rabbit, and had no reason to be afraid of it.
Korean: 그것은 “매리 앤! 매리 앤!”하고 부르는 소리였다. “지금 당장 내 부채와 장갑을 가져와!” 작게 통통거리는 발소리는 계단으로 이어졌다. 앨리스는 토끼가 자신을 찾으러 왔다는 것을 알았다. 앨리스는 자신이 토끼보다 수 천배는 더 커졌기 때문에 무서워 할 필요가 없다는 것을 잠시 잊어 버리고는 집이 흔들릴 만큼 무서워 몸을 떨었다.
English: Presently the Rabbit came up to the door, and tried to open it, but as the door opened inwards, and Alice’s elbow was pressed hard against it, that attempt proved a failure. Alice heard it say to itself, “Then I’ll go round and get in at the window.” “That you won’t” thought Alice, and after waiting till she fancied she heard the Rabbit just under the window, she suddenly spread out her hand, and made a snatch in the air. She did not get hold of anything, but she heard a little shriek and a fall, and a crash of broken glass, from which she concluded that it was just possible it had fallen into a cucumber-frame, or something of the sort.
Korean: 토끼는 이제 방문 앞에 도착했다. 그리고는 문을 밀었다. 그러나 방 문은 안 쪽으로 열리는 문이었고, 안에서는 앨리스의 팔꿈치가 문을 막고 있었기 때문에 문은 꼼짝도 하지 않았다. 앨리스는 토끼가 “그럼, 돌아서 창문으로 들어가야 겠다.”하고 중얼거리는 소리를 들었다. 앨리스는 “그것도 안 될텐데.”하고 생각했다. 잠시 기다리던 앨리스는 토끼가 창문 아래에 왔다는 생각이 들자 순간 창 밖으로 뻗어두었던 손을 펼쳐 잡으려는 시늉을 했다. 앨리스의 손에 잡힌 것은 아무것도 없었지만, 밖에서는 비명소리와 함께 무언가 떨어지는 소리, 그리고 유리창 깨지는 소리가 차례로 들렸다. 앨리스는 아마도 토끼가 오이 지지대나 그 비슷한 것에 떨어진 것이라 생각했다.

English: Next came an angry voice the Rabbit’s “Pat! Pat! Where are you?” And then a voice she had never heard before, “Sure then I’m here! Digging for apples, yer honour!”
Korean: 그리고는 토끼의 화난 목소리가 들렸다. “팻! 팻! 어디있어?” 그러자 앨리스가 처음 듣는 목소리가 “여기 있습죠. 저야 물론 사과를 심을 구멍을 뚫고 있어요, 나리.”하고 대답했다.
English: “Digging for apples, indeed!” said the Rabbit angrily. “Here! Come and help me out of this!” (Sounds of more broken glass.)
Korean: “사과 심을 나무라니!”하고 토끼는 화를 냈다. “여기 와서 이거나 좀 도와!”(그리고는 또 유리 깨지는 소리가 들렸다.)
English: “Now tell me, Pat, what’s that in the window?”
Korean: “말해봐, 팻 저 창문 나온 게 뭐지?”
English: “Sure, it’s an arm, yer honour!” (He pronounced it “arrum.”)
Korean: “예, 저건 팔입니다, 나리”(팻은 ‘폴’이라고 발음했다.)
English: “An arm, you goose! Who ever saw one that size? Why, it fills the whole window!”
Korean: “팔이라고, 이 바보야! 저렇게 큰 팔이 어디 있다고 그래! 창문 하나를 꽉 채우고 있잖아!”
English: “Sure, it does, yer honour: but it’s an arm for all that.”
Korean: “예, 그렇구 말고요, 나리. 하지만 저건 팔이 맞습니다.”
English: “Well, it’s got no business there, at any rate: go and take it away!”
Korean: “흠, 크기야 상관없지. 가서 저것 좀 치워!”
English: There was a long silence after this, and Alice could only hear whispers now and then, such as, “Sure, I don’t like it, yer honour, at all, at all!” “Do as I tell you, you coward!” and at last she spread out her hand again and made another snatch in the air. This time there were two little shrieks, and more sounds of broken glass. “What a number of cucumber frames there must be!” thought Alice. “I wonder what they’ll do next! As for pulling me out of the window, I only wish they could! I’m sure I don’t want to stay in here any longer!”
Korean: 그리고는 한 동안 별 소리가 들리지 않았다. 앨리스는 간혹 무언가 속닥거리는 소리를 들을 수 있었는데, 이를테면 “예, 그건 좋지 않은뎁쇼, 나리. 정말로요.”“시키는대로 해, 이 겁쟁이야!”같은 소리였다. 앨리스는 결국 다시 한 번 손을 휙하고 움직여 무언가를 잡는 시늉을 했다. 이번엔 둘이 내는 비명 소리와 유리 깨지는 소리였다. 앨리스는 “오이 지지대가 얼마나 많은거야! 저들이 다음에 무얼할까? 창문 밖으로 날 끄집어 내 주기만 한다면 좋겠는데! 나도 여기 더 있기는 싫다고! ”하고 생각했다.
coward: 겁쟁이
English: She waited for some time without hearing anything more: at last came a rumbling of little cart-wheels, and the sound of a good many voices all talking together: she made out the words, “Where’s the other ladder? Why, I hadn’t to bring but one: Bill’s got the other Bill! fetch it here, lad! Here, put’em up at this corner No, tie’em together first they don’t reach half high enough yet Oh! they’ll do well enough; don’t be particular Here Bill! catch hold of this rope Will the roof bear?” Mind that loose slate Oh, it’s coming down! Heads below!” (a loud crush) “Now, who did that? It was Bill, I fancy Who’s to go down the chimney? Nay, I shan’t! You do it! That I won’t then! Bill’s got to go down Here, Bill! the master says you’ve got to go down the chimney!”
Korean: 앨리스는 기다렸다. 밖에서는 아무 소리도 들리지 않았다. 조금 지나니 수레를 끄는 소리며 여럿이 모여 웅성거리는 소리가 들렸다. “다른 사다리는 어디 있지?”-“ 저는 하나 밖에 안 가지고 왔는뎁쇼. 빌이 하나 갖고 있습죠.” - “빌, 사다리 가져와!” - “여기 말야, 이쪽에 세워봐. 아니, 먼저 두 개를 이어야지. 하나 가지곤 높이가 모자라.”- “그 정도면 충분해. 너무 나가지마.” -“여기야, 빌. 이 밧줄 좀 묶어봐.”- “지붕이 견딜까? 그 쪽 기와 조심하고.”- “아, 떨어진다. 머리 조심해. (쿵 하는 소리가 났다.) - “방금 누가 기와 떨어뜨린거야? 아마 빌 인 것 같군.”- “그럼 누가 굴뚝으로 내려갈 거지?”- “전 못해유! 주인님이 하세유!”- “내가 어떻게 해!”-“빌이 내려갈꺼에유. 이봐, 빌! 주인님 굴뚝 아래로 내려가 보라신다!”
English: “Oh, so Bill’s got to come down the chimney, has he?” said Alice to herself. “Why, they seem to put everything upon Bill! I wouldn’t be in Bill’s place for a good deal: this fireplace is narrow, to be sure, but I think I can kick a little!”
Korean: “그러니까 굴뚝으로 내려오는 게 빌이란 말이지?”하고 앨리스는 혼잣말을 했다. “부끄러운 일이네, 모든 걸 빌에게만 맡겨 버리다니! 내가 빌이라면 난 절대 안 해. 여기 벽난로는 너무 좁잖아. 그치만, 발을 조금 차 볼 수는 있을 것 같네.”
English: She drew her foot as far down the chimney as she could, and waited till she heard a little animal (she couldn’t guess of what sort it was) scratching and scrambling about in the chimney close above her: then, saying to herself, “This is Bill,” she gave one sharp kick, and waited to see what would happen next.
Korean: 앨리스는 몸 쪽으로 가능한 만큼 발을 바짝 당겼다. 그리고는 작은 동물(그게 어떤 동물일지는 몰라도)이 굴뚝을 통해 앨리스에게 다가오려고 끙끙대며 기어오는 소리를 듣자 “이게 빌이로군.”하고 말하며 냉큼 걷어 차 버렸다. 그리고는 무슨 일이 일어날 지 기다렸다.
English: The first thing she heard was a general chorus of “There goes Bill!” then the Rabbit’s voice alone “Catch him, you by the hedge!” then silence, and then another confusion of voices “Hold up his head - Brandy now - Don’t choke him - How was it, old fellow? What happened to you? Tell us all about it!”
Korean: 앨리스가 가장 먼저 들은 소리는 밖에 있는 모두가 “저기 빌이 간다!”라고 외치는 소리였다. 다음은 토끼가 “빌을 잡아, 거기 울타리 옆에 있는 너 말이야!”하고 외치는 소리였다. 그리고는 한 동안 조용하더니, “거기 머리를 좀 잡아, 이제 브랜디를 좀 먹여. 목은 누르지 말고.” - “좀 어때? 무슨 일이 있었던거야? 얘기좀 해봐!”하는 부산스러운 소리가 들렸다.
English: Last came a little feeble squeaking voice, (“That’s Bill,” thought Alice,) “Well, I hardly know - No more, thank’ye, I’m better now - but I’m a deal too flustered to tell you - all I know is, something comes at me like a Jack-in-the-box, and up I goes like a sky-rocket!”
Korean: 그러자 힘 없이 갈라지는 목소리가 말했다.(앨리스는 “아마 빌 일거야.”하고 생각했다.) “글쎄요. 잘 모르겠는데요. - 이제 브랜디는 됐어요. 고맙습니다. 좀 살 것 같군요. - 정신이 없네요. - 기억나는 건 그저 뭔가 깜짝 상자에서 튀어나온 광대인형처럼 내게 달려들더니 내가 하늘을 나는 로켓처럼 솟구쳐 올랐다는 것뿐이예요.”
English: “So you did, old fellow!” said the others.
Korean: “저런 그랬구나.”하고 다들 맞장구를 쳤다.
English: “We must burn the house down!” said the Rabbit’s voice, and Alice called out as loud as she could, “If you do, I’ll set Dinah at you!”
Korean: “아무래도 집을 태워버려야겠어!”하는 토끼의 목소리가 들렸다. 그 소리를 들은 앨리스는 우렁찬 목소리로 “그랬다간 디나를 보낼꺼야!”하고 소리쳤다.
English: There was a dead silence instantly, and Alice thought to herself, “I wonder what they will do next! If they had any sense, they’d take the roof off.” After a minute or two they began moving about again, and Alice heard the Rabbit say, “A barrowful will do, to begin with.”
Korean: 일순간에 바깥은 쥐 죽은 듯 조용해졌다. 앨리스는 “다음엔 또 뭘 하려고 할 지 알 수가 없네. 생각이 좀 있다면 지붕을 뜯어내면 될텐데.”하고 생각했다. 얼마지나지 않아 밖은 다시 웅성거리기 시작했다.“일단 한 수레면 돼. 시작은.”라고 말하는 토끼의 소리가 들렸다.
English: “A barrowful of what?” thought ALice; but she had not long to doubt, for the next moment a shower of little pebbles came rattling in at the window, and some of them hit her in the face. “I’ll put a shop to this,” she said to herself and shouted out, “You’d better not do that again!” which produced another dead silence.
Korean: “뭐가 한 수레라는 거야?”하고 앨리스는 생각했다. 그러나 작은 자갈들이 창문을 통해 쏟아져 앨리스의 얼굴을 때리자 앨리스는 그게 무엇인지 금방 알게 되었다. 앨리스는 “그만 두게 해야겠어.”하고 혼잣말을 하고는 큰 소리로 “다신 안 그러는 게 좋을 걸!”하고 소리쳤다. 그러자 바깥은 다시 조용해졌다.
English: Alice noticed with some surprise that the pebbles were all turning into little cakes as they lay on the floor, and a bright idea came in her head. “If I eat one of these cakes,” she thought, “it’s sure to make some change in my size; and as it can’t possibly make me larger, it must make me smaller, I suppose.”
Korean: 순간 놀랍게도 앨리스는 바닥 여기 저기에 널린 자갈들이 모두 과자로 변했다는 것을 알았다. 번뜩이는 생각이 앨리스의 머리를 스쳤다. 앨리스는 “내가 이 과자를 먹으면 분명 몸이 커지거나 작아지겠지? 아마 이보다 더 커지게 할 것 같지는 않아, 그러니까 작아지는 게 틀림없어.”하고 생각했다.
English: So she swallowed one of the cakes, and was delighted to find that she began shrinking directly, As soon as she was small enough to get through the door, she ran out of the house, and found quite a crowd of little animals and birds waiting outside. The poor little Lizard, Bill, was in the middle, being held up by two guinea-pigs, who were giving it something out of a bottle. They all made a rush at Alice the moment she appeared, but she ran off as hard as she could, and soon found herself safe in a thick wood.

English: “The first thing I’ve got to do,” said Alice to herself, as she wandered about in the wood, “is to grow to my right size again; and the second thing is to find my way into that lovely garden, I think that will be the best plan.”

English: It sounded an excellent plan, no doubt, and very neatly and simply arranged; the only difficulty was, that she had not the smallest idea how to set about it; and while she was peering about anxiously among the trees, a little sharp bark just over her head made her look up in a great hurry.

English: An enormous puppy was looking down at her with large round eyes, and feebly stretching out one paw, trying to touch her. “Poor little thing!” said Alice in a coaxing tone, and she tried hard to whistle to it, but she was terribly frightened all the time at the thought that it might be hungry, in which case it would be very likely to eat her up in spite of all her coaxing.

English: Hardly knowing what she did, she picked up a little bit of stick, and held it out to she puppy; whereupon the puppy jumped into the air off all its feet at once, with a yelp of delight, and rushed at the stick, and made believe to worry it; then Alice dodged behind a great thistle, to keep herself from being run over, and the moment she appeared on the other side, the puppy made another rush at the stick, and tumbled head over heels in its hurry to get hold of it; then Alice, thinking it was very like having a game of play with a carthorse, and expecting every moment to be trampled under its feet, ran round the thistle again; then the puppy began a series of short charges at the stick, running a very little way forwards each time and a long way back, and barking hoarsely all the while, till at last it sat down a good way off, panting, with its tongue hanging out of its mouth, and its great eyes half shut.
Korean: 앨리스는 정신 없이 일단 작은 나뭇가지 하나를 들어 강아지에게 내밀어 보았다. 강아지는 신이나서 곧바로 나뭇가지를 잡으려 뛰어들었고 이는 앨리스의 걱정을 더욱 키웠다. 앨리스는 강아지가 덮치지 못하게 커다란 엉겅퀴 뒤에 숨었다. 앨리스가 나타날 때마다 강아지는 다시 달려들어 나뭇가지를 물려고 법석댔다. 발에 밟힐 것 같은 것이 꼭 마차를 끄는 말이랑 노는 것과 비슷하다고 생각하면서, 앨리스는 엉겅퀴 뒤로 숨기를 반복하였다. 어느 순간 강아지가 나뭇가지에 달려드는 빈도가 짧아졌다. 뒤로는 멀리 물러나면서도 앞으로는 조금만 움직이면서 앉아 쉴 기회를 찾으며 계속 짖어댔다.강아지는 혀를 내밀고 눈은 반쯤 감은 채로 헐떡이고 있었다.
English: This seemed to Alice a good opportunity for making her escape, so she set off at once, and ran till she was quite tired and out of breath, and till the puppy’s bark sounded quite faint in the distance.
Korean: 앨리스가 도망 칠 절호의 기회였다. 앨리스는 힘껏 달렸다. 지치고 숨이 찬데다 강아지가 짖는 소리가 멀리서 희미하게 들렸기 때문에 앨리스는 달리기를 멈췄다.
English: “And yet what a dear little puppy it was!” said Alice, as she leant against a buttercup to rest herself, and fanned herself with one of the leaves, “I should have liked teaching it tricks very much, if - if I’d only been the right size to do it! Oh dear! I’d nearly forgotten that I’ve got to grow up again! Let me see - how is it to be managed” I suppose I ought to eat or drink something or other; but the great question is, what?”

English: The great question certainly was, what? Alice looked all round her at the flowers and the blades of grass, but she could not see anything that looked like the right thing to eat or drink under the circumstances. There was a large mushroom growing near her, about the same height as herself, and when she had looked under it, and on both sides of it, and behind it, it occurred to her that she might as well look and see what was on the top of it.

English: She stretched herself up on tiptoe, and peeped over the edge of the mushroom, and her eyes immediately met those of a large blue caterpillar, that was sitting on the top with its arms folded, quietly smoking a long hookah, and taking not the smallest notice of her or of anything else.
