영어를 기록하는 것이라 해석본을 참조합니다.
한 번씩 읽으면서 이야기를 읽어만 봐도 도움이 많이된다. 읽으면서 이해할 때는 영어를 정확히 번역하지 않고 한번 마무리하고 그다음 천천히 이해하면 좋다.
오늘은 “Roget’s Thesaurus” 라는 것에 대해서 이야기를 해주셨다. 이는 동의어 사전이라고 생각하면 된다. 예를 들어서 ‘happy’를 찾으면 ‘joyful’, ‘content’, ‘pleased’ 등과 같은 동의어를 찾을 수 있다. 또한 반대 의미의 단어도 제공이 되는데 ‘happy’의 경우 ‘unhappy’, ‘sad’, ‘miserable’ 등의 단어를 찾을 수 있다.
이는 논문을 쓸 때도 도움이 많이 될 것 같다.
이야기를 하다가 헤어질 때 어떻게 해야하는지도 배웠다. 한국의 경우 보통 연세가 높은 사람이 먼저 오늘은 여기까지라고 한다면 여기에서는 젊은사람이 먼저 오늘은 여기까지 한다고 한다.

English: They were indeed a queer-looking party that assembled on the bank the birds with draggled feathers, the animals with their fur clinging close to them, and all dripping wet, cross, and uncomfortable.
Korean: 웅덩이를 벗어나 둑에 모인 무리는 우스꽝스러운 모습이었다. 새들의 깃은 젖어 축 쳐졌고, 동물들의 털도 몸에 착 달라붙어있었다. 모두 물이 뚝뚝 떨어질 정도로 흠뻑 젖어 짜증스럽고 불편해 했다.
English: The first question of course was, how to get dry again: they had a consultation about this, and after a few minutes it seemed quite natural to Alice to find herself talking familiarly with them, as if she had known them all her life. Indeed, she had quite a long argument with the Lory, who at last turned sulky, and would only say, “I am older than you, and must know better;” and this Alice would not allow, without knowing how old it was, and, as the Lory positively refused to tell its age, there was no more to be said.
Korean:첫 번째 과제는 당연히 어떻게 다시 몸을 말릴 것인가였다. 동물들은 서로 저마다 의견을 냈는데, 그러다 보니 앨리스도 이 동물들과 평생 알고 지낸 것처럼 자연스럽게 끼어들어 이야기하고 있었다. 사실, 앨리스는 잉꼬와 오랫동안 말다툼을 했다. 잉꼬는 결국 샐쭉해져서, “내가 너보다 나이가 많으니까, 내가 더 잘 알지.”라고 말했다. 잉꼬의 나이를 알기 전에는 앨리스로서는 그 말이 진짜인지 알 도리가 없었지만, 잉꼬가 단호하게 나이 밝히기를 거부했기 때문에, 더 이상의 대화는 없었다.
English: At last the Mouse, who seemed to be a person of some authority among them, called out, “Sit down, all of you, and listen to me! I’ll soon make you dry enough!” They all sat down at once, in a large ring, with the Mouse in the middle.
Korean: 마침내 동물들 가운데 그래도 권위있어 보이는 생쥐가 이렇게 말했다. “모두 앉아서 제 말 좀 들어보시죠. 금방 몸이 마르도록 해 드리겠습니다.” 동물들은 대번에 생쥐 주변에 둥그렇게 모여 앉았다. 앨리스도 몸을 얼른 말리지 않으면 독한 감기에 걸릴 것이라 생각하며 눈을 크게 뜨고 걱정스레 생쥐를 바라보았다.
English: Alice kept her eyes anxiously fixed on it, for she felt sure she would catch a bad cold if she did not get dry very soon. “Ahem!” said the Mouse with an important air, “are you all ready? This is the driest thing I know. Silence all round, if you please! ‘William the Conqueror, whose cause was favoured by the pope, was soon submitted to by the English, who wanted leaders, and had been of late much accustomed to usurpation and conquest. Edwin and Morear, the earls of Mercia and Northumbria-‘”
Korean: “에헴!” 생쥐가 젠체하며 이야기를 시작했다. “준비되셨나요? 이건 제가 아는 가장 매마른 이야기입니다. 정숙해 주시길 부탁드립니다! ‘교황의 총애로 명분을 얻은 정복자 윌리엄에게, 지도자를 원했고 약탈당하고 정복당하는데 너무나 익숙했던 잉글랜드 사람들은 곧바로 복종했습니다. 메르시아와 노섬브리아의 백작 에드윈과 모르카르는 – ’”
과연 이런 이야기는 왜 나온 것인가? 싱겁고 재미없는 이야기는 dry하다고 한다. 그렇기에 여기서 재미없는 이야기를 말하기 시작하는 부분은 젖은 이들을 dry 시키기 위해서다.
English: “Ugh!” said the Lory, with a shiver.
Korean: 이 때 잉꼬가 “콜록”하고 기침을 하며 몸을 떨었다.
English: “I beg your pardon?” said the Mouse, frowning, but very politely: “Did you speak?”
Korean: 생쥐는 눈살을 찌뿌렸지만, 정중하게 말했다. “실례지만, 뭐라고 말씀하셨죠?”
English: “Not I!” said the Lory, hastily.
Korean: “아냐!”하고 잉꼬는 황급히 대답했다.
English: “I thought you did,” said the Mouse. -“ I proceed. ‘Edwin and Morear, the earls of Mercia and Northumbria, declared for him; and even Stigand, the patriotic archbishop of Canterbury, found it advisable-“
Korean: “뭐라고 하신 줄 알았습니다, 그럼 이야기를 계속 하지요.”생쥐는 말했다. “‘메르시아와 노섬브리아의 백작 에드윈과 모르카르는 윌리엄을 따르겠다고 공표했습니다. 애국심이 높았던 켄터베리 대주교 스티건드마저도 그 것이 타당하다는 것을 알았지요. – ’”
English: “Found what?” said the Duck.
Korean: “뭘 알았다고?”하고 오리가 물었다.
English: “Found it,” the Mouse replied rather crossly: “of course you know what ‘it’ means.”
Korean: “그걸 알았다고요.”하고 생쥐가 대답했다. “‘그것’이 무얼 뜻하는 지는 당연히 아시겠죠.”
English: “I know what ‘it’ means well enough, when I find a thing,” said the Duck : “it’s generally a frog or a worm. The question is, what did the archbishop find?”
Korean: “‘그것’이 뭔지는 잘 알지. 내가 뭘 알게되면, 대게 ‘그것’은 대게 개구리나 벌레야. 그런데, 대주교는 무얼 알게된 거지?”하고 오리가 말했다.
English: The mouse did not notice this question, but hurriedly went on, “‘-found it advisable to go with Edger Atheling to meet William and offer him the crown. William’s conduct at first was moderate. But the insolence of his Normans-‘ How are you getting on now, my dear?” it continued, turning to Alice as it spoke.
Korean: 생쥐는 오리의 질문을 듣지 못하고 빠르게 이야기를 이어갔다. “‘대주교는 에드가 에설링이 윌리엄을 찾아가 왕관을 건네는 편이 타당하다는 것을 알았습니다. 윌리엄은 처음에는 정중하게 행동하였지만, 오만한 노르만인들이 – ‘얘, 넌 좀 어때?’ ” 생쥐가 앨리스에게 이렇게 말하며 몸을 돌렸다.
English: “As wet as ever”, said Alice in a melancholy tone: “it doesn’t seem to dry me at all.”
Korean: 이렇게 흠뻑 젖은 적이없어. 그 이야기가 젖은 걸 말려주는 것 같지는 않아.” 앨리스가 우울한 목소리로 대답했다.
English: “In that case,” said the Dodo solemnly, rising to its feet, “I move that the meeting adjourn, for the immediate adoption of more energetic remedies-“
Korean: 그러자, 도도새가 일어서 발을 들더니 근엄하게 말했다. “그러면, 난 보다 활동적인 방법을 당장 도입하기 위해 휴정하겠어.”
English: “Speak English!” said the Eaglet. “I don’t know the meaning of half those long words, and, what’s more, I don’t believe you do either!” And the Eaglet bent down its head to hide a smile: some of the other birds tittered audibly.
Korean: “좀 알아듣게 말해!”하고 어린 독수리가 말했다. “무슨 소리인지 반도 못 알아듣겠네. 더군다나, 너도 무슨 소린지 모르는 것 같은데?” 그리고는 어린 독수리가 웃음을 감추기 위해 고개를 숙였다. 다른 새 몇 마리는 킥킥 거리며 소리내어 웃었다.
English: “What I was going to say,” said the Dodo in an offended tone, “was, that the best thing to get us dry would be a Caucus-race.”
Korean: “내가 하려는 말은”하고 도도새가 조금 화난 목소리로 말했다. “몸을 말리는 데는 코커스 경주를 하는 게 가장 좋다는 거야.”
English: “What is a Caucus-race?” said Alice; not that she much wanted to know, but the Dodo had paused as if it thought that somebody ought to speak, and no one else seemed inclined to say anything.
Korean: “코커스 경주가 뭐야?”하고 앨리스가 물었다. 사실 앨리스는 그다지 꼭 알아야 하겠다는 생각이 들진 않았다. 하지만 도도새가 누군가 물어봐야 한다는 듯이 뜸을 들였고 아무도 뭔가 물어 보고 싶어하지 않는 것 같아서 질문했다.
English: “Why,” said the Dodo, “the best way to explain it is to do it.” (And as you might like to try the thing yourself, some winter day, I will tell you how the Dodo managed it.)
Korean: “뭐,”하고 도도새가 말했다. “뭔가를 설명하는 가장 좋은 방법은 해 보는 거지.”(여러분 스스로 한 겨울에 그걸 해보려고 할 수도 있으니까, 여기서 도도새가 한 방법을 설명해 둔다.)
English: First it marked out a race-course, in a sort of circle, (“the exact shape doesn’t matter,” it said,) and then all the party were placed along the course, here and there. There was no “One, two, three, and away,” but they began running when they liked, and left off when they liked, so that it was not easy to know when the race was over. However, when they had been running half-an-hour or so, and were quite dry again, the Dodo suddenly called out, “The race is over!” and they all crowded round it, panting, and asking, “But who has won?”
Korean: 도도새는 먼저 원 비스무리한 것을 그려서 경주로를 만들었다.(도도새는 “꼭 정확한 원은 아니어도 돼.”라고 했다.) 그리고 저마다 경주로 이 곳 저 곳에 자리 잡았다. “준비, 출발”은 없고 각자 출발하고 싶은 때 출발해서 나오고 싶을 때 나오면 되었는데, 당연히 언제 경주가 끝나는지 알기가 어려웠다. 하지만, 삼십 분 정도 달리자 도도새가 갑자기 “경주 끝!”이라고 외쳤고 그 즈음에는 꽤나 몸이 말라 있었다. 경주로에 모인 동물들은 헐떡이면서“그런데, 누가 이겼지?”하고 물었다.
코커스 경주란 어쩌면 의미없는 경쟁이다. 이는 실제 우리가 현실에서 마주치는 문제와 같다. 정답도 없고 방법도 없는 경주…
English: This question the Dodo could not answer without a great deal of thought, and it sat for a long time with one finger pressed upon its forehead, (the position in which you usually see Shakespeare, in the pictures of him,) while the rest waited in silence. At last the Dodo said, “Everybody has won, and all must have prizes.”
Korean: 도도새는 쉽사리 대답할 수 없어서 손가락을 이마에 짚은 채로 앉아 오랫동안 생각했다. (셰익스피어의 그림에서 흔히 등장하는 포즈 말이다) 그 동안 동물들은 조용히 기다렸다. 마침내 도도새는 “모두가 이겼어. 그러니 모두 상을 받아야지.”하고 말했다.
English: “But who is to give the prizes?” quite a chorus of voices asked.
Korean: “그러면 상은 누가 주는데?”하고 모두들 물었다.
English: “Why, she, of course,” said the Dodo, pointing to Alice with one finger; and the whole party at once crowded round her, calling out in a confused way, “Prizes! Prizes!”
Korean: “뭐, 당연히, 여기 이 아이가 줄거야.”하고 도도새는 앨리스를 손가락으로 가리켰다. 그러자 모든 동물들이 너도나도 “상 줘! 상 줘!”하며 앨리스에게 몰려들었다.
English: Alice had no idea what to do, and in despair she put her hand in her pocket, and pulled out a box of comfits, (luckily the salt water had not got into it,) and handed them round as prizes. There was exactly one a-piece, all round.
Korean: 앨리스는 어찌할 줄 몰라하며 다급하게 손을 주머니에 집어 넣었다. 그런데, 주머니 안에 사탕 한 봉지가 있었다. (다행히 사탕에는 소금물이 들어가지 않았다.) 앨리스는 동물들에게 사탕을 상으로 건넸다. 사탕은 모두에게 하나씩 딱 맞게 돌아갔다.
English: “But she must have a prize herself, you know,” said the Mouse.
Korean: “하지만, 얘도 사탕을 받아야 하잖아,”하고 생쥐가 말했다.
English: “Of course,” the Dodo replied very gravely. “What else have you got in your pocket?” he went on, turning to Alice.
Korean: 도도새는 “물론이지.”하고 매우 진지하게 대답하고는, “주머니에 뭐 남아있는 게 없니?”하고 앨리스에게 몸을 돌려 물었다.
English: “Only a thimble,” said Alice sadly.
Korean: “골무 한 개 뿐이야.”앨리스는 풀이죽어 대답했다.
English: “Hand it over here,” said the Dodo.
Korean: “이리 줘 봐.”도도새가 말했다.
English: Then they all crowded round her once more, while the Dodo solemnly presented the thimble, saying, “We beg your acceptance of this elegant thimble;” and, when it had finished this short speech, they all cheered.
Korean: 그러자 모두 다시 한 번 앨리스의 주위에 모였다. 도도새는 근엄하게 골무를 건네며 “이 품격있는 골무를 받아 주십시오.”라고 말했고, 모두 이에 환호했다.
English: Alice thought the whole thing very absurd, but they all looked so grave that she did not dare to laugh, and as she could not think of anything to say, she simply bowed, and took the thimble, looking as solemn as she could.
Korean: 앨리스는 이 모든 게 터무니 없다고 생각했지만, 모두들 매우 진지해 보였기 때문에 감히 웃을 수 없었다. 앨리스는 뭐라 할 말이 없어 살짝 인사를 하고 가능한한 진지하게 골무를 받아 들었다.
English: The next thing was to eat the comfits: this caused some noise and confusion, as the large birds complained that they could not taste theirs, and the small ones choked and had to be patted on the back. However it was over at last, and they sat down again in a ring, and begged the Mouse to tell them something more.
Korean: 다음 과제는 사탕을 먹는 것이었다. 이 일에 한 마디씩 하며 소동이 일어났다. 큰 새들은 간에 기별도 안 온다며 투덜 거렸고, 작은 동물들은 사탕이 목에 걸려 등을 두드려 줘야만 했다. 어쨌거나 결국엔 모두 사탕을 먹었고, 다시 둥그렇게 모여 앉아 생쥐에게 이야기를 더 해달라고 졸랐다.
English: “You promised to tell me your history, you know,” said Alice, “and why it is you hate - C and D,” she added in a whisper, half afraid that it would be offended again.
Korean: “네 이야기를 해 준댔잖아.”하고 말하며 앨리스는 혹시나 생쥐의 마음을 다시 상하게 할까 걱정하며 작은 목소리로 “넌 왜 ‘고’로 시작하는 동물하고 ‘강’으로 시작하는 동물을 싫어하는데?”하고 덧붙였다.
English: “Mine is a long and sad tale!” said the Mouse, turning to Alice, and sighing.
Korean: 생쥐는 앨리스를 돌아보며 “이건 정말 길고 슬픈, 꼬리에 꼬리를 무는 이야기야.”하고는 한숨을 내쉬었다.
English: “It is a long tail, certainly,” said Alice, looking down with wonder at the Mouse’s tail; “but why do you call it sad?” And she kept on puzzling about it while the Mouse was speaking, so that her idea of the tale was something like this:- [skip]
Korean: 앨리스는 “맞아, 분명 긴 꼬리네.”라고 말하며 생쥐의 꼬리를 의아하게 쳐다보았다. “그런데 왜 슬프지?”생쥐가 이야기를 이어나가는 동안에도 앨리스는 꼬리가 슬픈 이유를 알아내려고 애썼고 결국 생쥐가 하려는 이야기가 이런 건 아닐까 생각했다.
English: “You are not attending!” asid the Mouse to ALice, severely. “What are you thinking of?”
Korean: “안 듣고 있네!”하고 생쥐가 앨리스에게 꾸짓듯이 물었다. “무슨 생각하는 거니?”
English: “I beg your pardon,” said Alice very humbly: “you had got to the fifth bend, I think?”
Korean: 앨리스는 “미안해”하고는 “이제 다섯 번 쯤 이야기가 굽어진거니?”하고 물었다.
English: “I had not!” cried the Mouse, sharply and very angrily.
Korean: 생쥐는 매우 화난 목소리로 날카롭게 “아냐. 전혀 이야기를 못 따라오네. 해매듯!”하고 외쳤다.
English: “A knot!” said Alice, always ready to make herself useful, and looking anxiously about her. “Oh, do let me help to undo it!”
Korean: “매듭이라고!”앨리스는 언제나 누군가에게 도움이 될 준비가 되어있었기에 걱정스러운 표정으로 생쥐를 보며 이렇게 말했다. “내가 푸는 걸 도와줄게!”
English: “I shall do nothing of the sort,” said the Mouse, getting up and walking away. “You insult me by talking such nonsense!”
Korean: 생쥐는 “그런 일은 없어.”하고는 “넌 말도 안되는 소리로 날 모욕했어!”하며 자리에서 일어나 가 버렸다.
English: “I didn’t mean it!” pleaded poor Alice. “But you’re so easily offended, you know!”
Korean: 가여운 앨리스는 “그런 뜻이 아냐!”하고 애원했다.“그나저나, 너 정말 잘 삐진다!”
English: The Mouse only growled in reply.
Korean: 생쥐는 이 말에 콧방귀를 뀔 뿐이었다.
English: “Please come back, and finish your story!” Alice called after it; and the others all joined in chorus, “Yes, please do!” but the Mouse only shook its head impatiently, and walked a little quicker.
Korean: 앨리스는 생쥐의 등에 대고 “제발 돌아와서 이야기를 마저 해줘.”라고 말하며 생쥐를 불렀다. 그러자 모여 있던 동물들도 다 같이 “제발 이야기 해줘”하고 한 목소리로 졸랐다. 하지만 생쥐는 머리를 절래절래 흔들며 더욱 걸음을 빠르게 할 뿐이었다.
English: “What a pity it wouldn’t stay!” sighed the Lory, as soon as it was quite out of sight; and an old crab took the opportunity of saying to her daughter, “Ah, my dear! Let this he a lesson to you never to lose your temper!” “Hold your tongue, Ma!” said the young crab, a little snappishly. “You’re enough to try the patience of an oyster!”
Korean: 생쥐가 더 이상 보이지 않자, 잉꼬는 “그냥 가버리다니 섭섭하군.”하고 말했다. 늙은 게는 자기 딸에게 한 마디 할 기회를 잡았다. “얘야. 이걸 보고 왜 툭하면 화를 내지 않아야 하는지 깨달으렴.” 그러자 어린 게는 “잔소리 하지 마세요, 엄마!”하고 대꾸했다. “조개처럼 입을 꼭 다물라는 말은 지겨워요!”
English: “I wish I had our Dinah here, I know I do!” said Alice aloud, addressing nobody in particular. “She’d soon fetch it back!”
Korean: 앨리스는 누구에게랄 것 없이 혼잣말을 중얼거렸다. “우리 디나가 여기 있었으면 좋았을 걸. 그러면 생쥐를 재빨리 잡아 올텐데.”
English: “And who is Dinah, if I might venture to ask the question?” said the Lory.
Korean: 잉꼬가 이 말을 듣고는 “그런데 디나가 누구지? 알려 주겠니?”하고 물었다.
English: Alice replied eagerly, for she was always ready to talk about her pet. “Dinah’s our cat. And she’s such a capital one for catching mice you can’t think! And oh, I wish you could see her after the birds! Why, she’ll eat a little bird as soon as look at it!”
Korean: 앨리스는 언제나 자기 애완 동물에 대해 이야기 하고 싶어했기 때문에 주저하지 않고 신나게 대답했다.“디나는 우리 고양이야. 쥐를 정말 잘 잡아. 상상도 못할껄! 너도 디나가 새를 잡는 걸 봐야 하는데! 글쎄, 새를 보면 순식간에 잡아먹는다니까!”
English: This speech caused a remarkable sensation among the party. Some of the birds hurried off at once: one old magpie began wrapping itself up very carefully, remarking, “I really must be getting home; the night-air doesn’t suit my throat!” and a canary called out in a trembling voice to its children, “Come away, my dears! It’s high time you were all in bed!” On various pretexts they all moved off, and Alice was soon left alone.
Korean: 이 이야기에 모여 있던 동물들은 혼비백산했다. 어떤 새들은 곧장 자리를 떴다. 까치는 잔뜩 움추리면서 “집에 가야겠어! 밤 공기가 내 목에 좋지 않거든. ”하고 말했다. 엄마 카나리아는 떨리는 목소리로 “얘들아, 이제 잘 시간이야.”하고 아이들을 불러모았다. 모든 동물들이 이런 저런 이유를 대며 떠나고 나니, 앨리스는 다시 혼자가 되었다.
English: “I wish I hadn’t mentioned Dinah!” she said to herself in a melancholy tone. “Nobody seems to like her, down here, and I’m sure she’s the best cat in the world! Oh, my dear Dinah! I wonder if I shall ever see you any more!” And here poor Alice began to cry again, for she felt very lonely and low-spirited. In a little while, however, she again heard a little pattering of footsteps in the distance, and she looked up eagerly, half hoping that the Mouse had changed his mind, and was coming back to finish his story.
Korean: “디나 얘기는 괜히 꺼냈어.”하고 앨리스는 슬픈 목소리로 말했다. “여기선 아무도 디나를 좋아하지 않네. 하지만, 디나는 정말 세계에서 가장 멋진 고양이란 말야! 아, 내 귀여운 디나! 내가 널 다시 볼 수 있을까?” 이렇게 말하며 가여운 앨리스는 다시 울기 시작하였다. 앨리스는 정말 외로웠고 기분은 한껏 가라 앉았다. 얼마가 지났을까, 어디선가 다시 작은 발자국 소리가 들렸다. 앨리스는 생쥐가 마음을 바꿔 이야기를 마저 끝내려고 돌아 오는 게 아닌가 기대하며 고개를 들었다.
